Astronomy 110, Homework #10

Due  December 4th, 2012

Name:______________________________________________________

1) What is the Cosmic Microwave Background, and why is its detection so important? (10 points)

2) The Hubble law is V = HoD, that is the "recession velocity" (V) is equal to the Hubble constant (Ho) times the distance. In class (and for the notes for Class #25) we calculated the age of the Universe for a Hubble constant of 75 km/s/Mpc. Using the same technique (that is, for a galaxy at 100 Mpc) answer the following questions.

a) What would be the age of the Universe if the Hubble constant was 300 km/s/Mpc? (8 points)

b) How does this compare to the age of the Sun (4.5 billion years)? (7 points)
