course

Comment about the class notes: I will not edit Jon's notes this
one time I am filling in for him. Rather, his set of notes, which will
form the backbone of this course will remain as is and I will add
supplemental notes both on line and during class (do not assume
everything will be online, the discussions in class matter). Jon's
class notes page includes a link to a .ps file of the entire set of
notes. My impression is that this file does not include exactly what is
online (e.g. some figures seem to be missing), but it may be useful to
print it out and follow it along in the class. I will teach from the
web-based notes as much as possible.
Announcements:
Class on Th, Jan 22 will end at 1:55 pm due to an exam that I have
to attend in physics.

Current assignments:
Think about some galaxy research projects
you would consider for your paper. We will discuss the various
suggestions in class next week. The Sloan database has optical images
and photometry in 5 filters and spectroscopy in the range 4000-10000
Angstrom for hundreds of thousands of galaxies.
