- The Sun appears to move around in the sky. Its path changes over the course
of a year
- The stars appear to move around in the sky. Each night the pattern of stars
is shifted slightly from the night before, leading to different constellations being
seen at different times of the year. If you could see the stars during the daytime,
each day, the Sun would appear to move a little with respect to the stars.
- The Moon appears to move around in the sky. Each night the position of the Moon
is shifted relative to the stars, coming back to the same location roughly each
month
- There are a few objects (planets) that also move with respect to the pattern
of the stars. Their motion can be complicated: sometimes they appear to move in
one direction, at other times they move back in the opposite direction (retrograde
motion). Some are only seen at particular times of day (Venus and Mercury).
