NMSU has decided that the carpet in BX102 needs to be replaced; it is frayed,
several students have reported tripping on some of the rips, and the
University's legal counsel is concerned that a serious injury could lead
to a lawsuit against the University. The heavy-duty, stain-resistent carpet
that is required is extremely expensive, $100 per square foot. NMSU commissions
a study to determine how much carpet is required. They find 5 groups of
ASTR110 graduates (who have been trained in measurement) who agree to
make measurements for $10 each (students work cheap!). They also hire an
outside group, the Center for Precision Measurements, to make a measurement;
the CPM charges $500 for this service. After a month, the groups report
their results:
Student group A
1205 sq. ft.
Student group B
1187 sq. ft.
Student group C
1242 sq. ft.
Student group D
1236 sq. ft.
Student group E
1100 sq. ft.
Center for Precision Measurement
1536 sq. ft.
What do you think NMSU should do?
A ) buy 1550 sq. ft. of carpet
B) buy 1250 sq. ft. of carpet
C) commission another study
D) ask class of critically-thinking ASTR110
to figure out what's going on (get prepared!)
