Academics » Graduate Student Organization
This is the portal to the web pages of the AGSO, the organization of astronomy graduate students at NMSU. We are officially recognized as a chartered organization by the Student Organizations and Programs office at NMSU.
We provide information about our group's activities, and graduate school life (yes – you can have one!). We meet weekly, at 2:30pm on Friday afternoons in the Astronomy Conference Room (room #119).

Cumulative Exam Dates
Exams are held from 10:00 till noon on Saturday mornings (in ASTR119)
- Fall 2012: Sept. 15, Oct. 13, Nov. 10, and Dec. 1
- Spring 2013: Jan. 19, Feb. 16, Mar. 9, Apr. 6, and Apr. 27
Scheduling a Comprehensive Examination
The Comprehensive Examination is held in the third or fourth year of study,
and is made up of two parts. You will take an oral exam focused on your
coursework, with a committee composed of several departmental faculty and at
least one external member. You will also give a colloquium talk, and present
your PhD Thesis plan to the department. Speak to the colloquium coordinator
to select an available date and time for your talk, and send them your talk
title and abstract, well ahead of time. The two portions of the exam need not
take place on the same day, and can be held in either order (though the
coursework exam usually precedes the thesis presentation).
You will need to formally schedule your Examination by filing two forms with the graduate school and with the astronomy department: the Doctorate of Philosophy Examination form, and the Program of Study and Committee for Doctoral Students form. These two forms must be submitted to the graduate school and to Ofelia Ruiz at least ten working days before the final component of the exam is held, or the graduate school will not accept the results.
